CANCER FREE! We surprised mom and cancer survivor, Raquel Lopez, after her last chemotherapy treatment at Advocate Christ Medical Center with a celebration and very special guest. Raquel was reunited with her close virtual-friend & Advocate Nurse, Lisa Wieland. Both women were diagnosed with colon cancer and received chemotherapy while pregnant - a situation so rare that it happens to less than one percent of women. Unable to find informational materials or support groups on the internet due to the rarity of their diagnosis, a now retired radiation oncology nurse introduced the two women online through Facebook Messenger. Since then, Raquel and Lisa have forged a strong bond on Facebook by helping one another through their cancer journeys. After Raquel’s last treatment, the two were finally able to meet in person. Members of their care teams were also in attendance, including Dr. Amer Hamad, an oncologist at at Advocate Christ, who presented them with two Chicago Cubs tickets and swag bags to enjoy at the game. Congrats to both of these courageous women for kicking cancer’s butt!
