BABY SOREYL'S LIFE-SAVING JOURNEY TO CHICAGO:
Soreyl Mirailh, a six-month-old Puerto Rican baby, was being scheduled for life-saving surgery when Hurricane Maria hit the island. Without power, the hospital was forced to cancel its surgeries. Parents Rogelio and Sylvia were desperate. They knew that the clock was ticking. Soreyl needed the surgery quickly, by the age of six months. Her congenital heart condition, called atrioventricular (AV) canal defect, could soon be irreversible without it. So, the family left its life behind in Puerto Rico and boarded a plane for Chicago to seek help.
As the family journeyed to the United States with no plan except to save their daughter's life, Soreyl’s pediatrician in Puerto Rico began seeking help on Facebook. She reached out to a nationwide group of physicians, who are also mothers. Her message was simple—we need to find a pediatric cardiologist in Chicago to get Soreyl the care she needs. She found one!
Dr. Melissa Nater, a pediatric cardiologist at Advocate Children’s Hospital and Puerto Rican native, was quickly tagged in the post by other physicians. The Mirailh’s found their prayers answered within days of their arrival.Dr. Nater arranged for colleagues, Drs. Andrew Van Bergen and Michel Ilbawi of Advocate Children’s Heart Institute to see Soreyl and put in motion her life-saving care.
Just weeks after landing in Chicago, little Soreyl was having open-heart surgery at Advocate Children’s Hospital. She is now doing great and the family has decided to make Chicago home permanently.
Today, we held a press conference to allow the Mirailh family to share their incredible story alongside the doctors who saved Soreyl’s life. Worship Pastor Brady Thelander of Chicago First Church of the Nazarene also joined us to share his congregation's story of how they rallied together to support the Mirailh's.
