An Advocate Condell Medical Center patient went into cardiac arrest while undergoing cardiac catheterization to open a blocked coronary artery. He was placed on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) so the procedure could be completed and to save his life. When a patient is placed on ECMO, his blood is removed and pumped through a machine that oxygenates it and returns it back to the patient. This enables the ECMO team to assist with a failing heart or lungs or both. Advocate Condell has an experienced, formal ECMO program for adults. The team can care for the most critically ill patients with cardiopulmonary failure.
